Albany County ZIP Code Coverage
Albany County's Sheriff ZIP and city-town-village crosswalk identifies 47 ZIP entries touching or serving the county. The list includes city delivery areas, suburban communities, hill towns, rural post-office labels, and edge ZIPs that reach another county. A ZIP code is a postal delivery geography. It can cross a city or town line, so the post-office label should never replace the municipality on an assessment, deed, voter, or court record. The leading entries below show the local geography that most often needs to be kept distinct.
| ZIP | Areas Covered | Post Office | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12023 | Berne | Berne label | Town and rural area |

| 12110 | Latham and North Colonie | Latham label | Colonie group |
| 12128 | Newtonville, Colonie, and Loudonville area | Newtonville label | Local municipal boundaries remain separate |
| 12143 | Ravena and Coeymans area | Ravena label | South-county group |
| 12183 | Green Island | Green Island label | Watervliet/Green Island group |
| 12189 | Watervliet | Watervliet label | City delivery area |

| 12204 | Albany and Menands | Albany/Menands label | Documented city-line mismatch |
| 12205 | Colonie, North Colonie, and Loudonville group | Colonie label | Not a City of Albany ZIP |
| 12211 | Loudonville and Colonie | Loudonville label | Suburban delivery geography |

The crosswalk also includes rural and edge labels such as Alcove, Altamont/Knox, Clarksville, Coeymans, Delanson, Guilderland, Glenmont, Selkirk, Slingerlands, Voorheesville, Westerlo, and Preston Hollow. It also includes Schenectady/Colonie edge ZIPs. The county list is a useful index, but USPS ZIP Code Lookup is the address-by-address authority for a current delivery ZIP.
Albany County ZIP Map Groups
The county ZIP Group Map uses broader local groups for reporting, not exact USPS boundary lines. Its labels include Guilderland/Pine Bush, Colonie/Latham, Watervliet/Green Island, North Albany/Menands, West End, State Campus, New Scotland Avenue, Delaware/2nd Avenue, New Scotland, Bethlehem, Hill Towns, and Ravena/Coeymans/Selkirk. A downtown inset further distinguishes Center Square/Arbor Hill, South End/Downtown, and South End.
Those group names help describe a part of the county without claiming that every address in a ZIP falls within a neighborhood or municipality. They also make the scale clear: the same Albany ZIP code directory has to account for capital-city delivery, suburban towns, villages, rural routes, and edges that point toward other counties. Use the map as a geography aid, then verify a specific mailing address with USPS and a specific parcel with the local records system.
| Urban and capital groups | North Albany/Menands, West End, State Campus, New Scotland Avenue, Delaware/2nd Avenue, and the downtown inset groups. |
|---|---|
| Suburban groups | Guilderland/Pine Bush, Colonie/Latham, Watervliet/Green Island, New Scotland, and Bethlehem. |
| South and rural groups | Hill Towns and Ravena/Coeymans/Selkirk. |
Verify Albany ZIP Codes With USPS
USPS offers three inspected lookup modes: By Address, By City and State, and Cities by ZIP. Use By Address when the street address is known. It takes an optional company, a required street, optional apartment information, a required city, a selected state, an optional ZIP, and an optional urbanization field. By City and State requires those two fields. Cities by ZIP requires the ZIP. Results can be displayed in 10, 20, or 30 rows.
| USPS mode | Fields supplied | Use |
|---|---|---|
| By Address | Street and city required; company, apartment, ZIP, and urbanization optional; state selected | Check a complete delivery address |
| By City and State | City and state required | Find postal ZIP results for a locality label |
| Cities by ZIP | ZIP required | See the city labels associated with a postal ZIP |
A USPS result standardizes delivery routing. The service warns that a ZIP result does not confirm a person or company at an address. That distinction matters for a directory search: first verify the address form, then look for the separate public record that answers the actual question.
Albany ZIP Filters in Public Portals
ZIP is not a universal local search filter. Albany County PROS quick search uses address, SBL, owner, Street Finder, and municipality controls. Its inspected advanced form also does not expose an explicit ZIP field. The New York State voter lookup is an individual lookup that uses a county and address rather than ZIP as the primary path. A parcel feature can have a ZIP attribute, but the statewide parcel service notes that the field may be empty for some features.
The NYS Department of State Licensee Name Search does explicitly accept ZIP as an optional filter. Its ZIP field narrows a named licensee search within the form's coverage. The NY DCJS registry also offers ZIP as one of three mutually exclusive online modes. These modes answer specialized questions, not a general list of everyone in a postal area.
| Search route | ZIP use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Albany County PROS | No ZIP field documented on inspected quick or advanced forms | Use municipality, street, address, SBL, or owner instead |
| NYS DOS Licensee Search | Optional Zip Code field with name, type, county, and city controls | Limited to license families covered by the service |
| NYS voter lookup | County and address, not ZIP, are the person-lookup path | It is not a ZIP-wide roster |
| NY DCJS registry | ZIP is one of three exclusive search modes | Its coverage and result rules are specific to that registry |
Search an Albany County ZIP
Use the ZIP code to narrow the geography first, then choose a record that actually accepts the remaining information. Start by standardizing the address with USPS. If the purpose is parcel research, use the municipality and street in PROS, then retain the SBL or print key returned by the parcel record. If the inquiry concerns an individual election record, the NYS lookup requires the person's last name, first name, date of birth, county, and address. It is not a countywide postal browse.
- Run the full street address through USPS and note the standardized delivery ZIP and city label. Do not treat the result as proof of a person or organization at that address.
- Match the address to the correct municipality. For a parcel, use PROS Street Finder, address, SBL, or owner fields, because its inspected forms do not offer a ZIP field.
- Record the parcel address, municipality, SBL or print key, and mailing address as separate fields. A mailing address may be a PO Box or an out-of-county contact point.
- For a state license search, enter the ZIP with the available name, county, city, or license-type information. For an individual voter lookup, use the county and address path instead.
- Once the municipality and street are known, use the Albany street directory for the address-level record trail and historical Street Guide route.
For a voter-file request, New York State requires an election-purpose statement and applies statutory limits to the statewide list. Confidential registrations and protected addresses do not become searchable simply because a ZIP is known. ZIP narrowing is useful, but it does not remove the access rules of each record system.
Albany ZIP Boundaries and Cities
ZIP boundaries do not follow City of Albany limits. The crosswalk explicitly gives 12204 an Albany/Menands label. It identifies 12205 with Colonie, 12211 and 12212 with Loudonville, 12183 with Green Island, and 12189 with Watervliet. An address can therefore use an Albany postal label while the assessment, election, code, or local government record is held by Menands, Colonie, or another municipal custodian.
Edge entries make the same point at a wider scale. The county-oriented list includes 12309 and the 12460 and 12469 Preston Hollow entries even though their delivery or county association can point beyond the City of Albany. Check the municipality, former street name where relevant, and parcel location before treating a county ZIP match as local residency. Postal labels support mail delivery. They are not a jurisdiction decision.
Albany ZIP Code Terms
Postal terms explain why two addresses with similar Albany labels can search differently. A full delivery ZIP can be refined by a ZIP+4, while a PO Box or a unique institutional code may not describe a residential neighborhood at all. The delivery sequence should be preserved exactly when it appears in USPS, but it should remain separate from the municipal parcel and street information used by local offices.
- ZIP and ZIP+4
- The five-digit ZIP identifies a delivery area. ZIP+4 adds a more specific delivery segment for the address or mail receptacle.
- PO Box ZIP
- A ZIP used for post-office-box delivery. It should not be assumed to represent a residential block or parcel.
- Unique ZIP
- A delivery identifier associated with a single institution or a specialized delivery arrangement. Verify its current address use with USPS.
- Carrier route
- A postal delivery sequence used to organize mail handling. It is not a city boundary, voter district, or parcel boundary.
Albany ZIP Evidence Limits
A ZIP code directory can locate delivery geography, but it cannot produce a complete resident list. USPS specifically says a ZIP result does not confirm a person or company at the address. A property roll identifies a parcel and recorded owner, not every occupant. A public voter result is an election record with input and disclosure limits. A state license or registry search has its own scope and does not establish a household connection.
For a reliable note, retain the address as searched, USPS result date, municipality, ZIP, and the separate record source. That preserves the difference between postal routing, a public record, and a claim about who is currently at an address.
